It's that time of year again when the sun sets behind the lighthouse at Rubha nan Gall. Rubha nan Gall is a great photographic location all year 'round but for three months of the year (May, June and July), there are some spectacular sunsets to be had - or rather, there is the chance of some spectacular sunsets. Whilst a sun compass, or increasingly apps such as The Photographer's Ephemeris or TPE, can predict with a high level of accuracy where the sun will be at any given point, the software which can guarantee or control the weather has yet to be invented.
The image above is taken from my first sunset foray to Rubha nan Gall of 2011 in late May. The conditions had looked promising and this was one of the first photographs I made once I had set up using some sea pinks as foreground interest. I settled in for what I hoped would be a stunning display of oranges, reds and purples once the sun dipped below the horizon. I had reckoned without the weather front sweeping in from Coll and this was really as good as the sunset got. The company of a seal, an otter, several oystercatchers and a myriad of midges was compensation, however - although that's perhaps going a bit too far in relation to the latter.
Watch this space for further sunset adventures.

Some good friends of ours, janette and Alan run a beautiful guest house in Tobermory, and we have been meaning to return to visit them. You wonderful photography has nudged me into action.
